Years on the NLS team: 2007-2010

Role: I worked on NLSY97 created variables on program participation, assets & debts, unemployment rates, fertility, marriage/cohabitation, schooling, training, and employment. I helped with NLSY79 survey interface, such as making sure that question skip logic works.

What innovations have I helped introduce to the NLS

An example in the employment section: When respondents answered "don't know" to the questions on wage or working hours for a job spell, the program used to assign a value from the past for these respondents -- making the assumption that people have the same wage or same working hours as they reported in the past. I raised a question on this assumption: people could change their work arrangement a lot. -- and helped to make sure this assumption was not made.

Why am I proud to be part of the NLS team

NLS Investigator is straightforward and efficient for the user! I heard many users praising the NLS Investigator's functions (multi-way query, display of question skip logic, customized data download), allowing them to be more efficient than with other surveys that lack these functions. Also, the questionnaire includes many interesting area.
